Organic rose oil with Ceres, USDA and JAS certification, as well as conventional rose oil.

Bulgarian rose oil is the global benchmark for quality.

One kilogram rose oil is usually obtained from 3 to 3.5 metric tons of rose blossom. In the composition of Bulgarian rose oil there are some 283 components. They are divided into two groups: carriers and fixatives of scent. The carriers of scent are the liquid parts of the oil – eleoptens. The fixatives of scent are solid at ambient temperature and odorless, but fix the scent and give it durability – stearoptens. Some of the many components of eleoptens of the rose oil scent are citronellol, geraniol, nerol, phenyl ethyl alcohol, but the typical rose aroma is formed by the presence of microelements. Rose oil is widely used in perfumery, cosmetics and medicine.

Rose oil concum and storage vessels

The Rose oil shipping vessel (concum): Certified by the Bulgarian Rose Company's own Accredited Laboratory. Concums are available in the sizes 50, 100 and 250 grams; 1, 5 and 15 kg. Safe transportation of the costly rose oil required good packing. For this purpose, special tinned copper vessels in decorated wooden casing, called concums were designed. The so-called muskals, made of copper or glass, also inserted in poker-worked wooden and sometimes metal casings, were used for smaller quantities. Pictured here are the 50, 100 grams and 1 kilogram concums. More info on the concum ...

Important information: There are several important considerations affecting the price of rose oil. Roses are collected during the months of May and June only. It takes approximately 3,000 - 3,500 kg (approx. 8,000 lbs) to obtain 1 kg (2.2046 lbs) of Rose oil. Increasing the available supply is only possible when new rose gardens are planted. It takes 2 years for the rose bushes to fully grow.

Rosa Damascena a bit of history!

Ancient rose oil distillation depiction

The first roses were brought to Thrace by the returning soldiers of Alexander of Macedon's garrisons. Belgian chronicle mentions that in 1210 crusaders saw large areas planted with roses near Edirne. It is however not clear whether it was not crusaders themselves who brought the roses to that region. The Rose Valley is a notion, generally associated with the location where the Bulgarian oil-bearing rose grows. More ...

It is generally accepted that there are more than 5000 varieties of roses, yet only a few of them exhibit that marked fragrance that is sought by perfumeries. The Bulgarian oil-bearing rose has been cultivated in the Rose Valley for more than 300 years now. It has established itself as a stable, independent type of rose, differing in its anatomy and physiology from the oil- bearing roses cultivated elsewhere, even from the original rose of the town of Kashan in Iran.

The oil-bearing rose species developed into an independent type as a result of the peculiar climate in the Rose Valley. It preserved its unique character due to a strictly applied new technology of multiplication and cultivation. This special technology, not used anywhere else, was adhered to by all rose growers in the region. More ...

What aromatic materials are avaialble from roses?

Rose materials from the famous Rosa Damascena: essential oil and flower water, absolute and concrete.

The Bulgarian flora because of the country's geographical location and climatic conditions is very rich in bioactive substances. Rose oil is an essential oil also known as Rose otto, or Attar of roses. It is obtained through hydro distillation from the Rosa damascena P. Miller. An oily transparent liquid heterogeneous mass below 23°C with yellow color and aroma characteristic of roses.

Rose essential oil is steam distilled, also called hydro distilled from fresh Rosa Damascena petals in May and June of every year. Essential oils are concentrated hydrophobic liquids containing volatile aromatic compounds. The plant material is heated in order for it to release the contained aromatic compounds. The resulting oil is collected and further perfected.

Rose water is hydro distilled for skin and hair care, as well as ingredient in cosmetics. The flower waters distilled by us are not Hydrosols or Hydrolats, nor are Byproducts from essential oil distillation. Distilled from fresh plant material during the growing season of the plants.

Rose absolute is solvent extraction from Rosa Damascena through evaporation and purification of rose concrete. Solvent extraction is a different method from distillation for achieving richness of aromatic compounds. The absolutes are concentrated aromatic oily mixture extracted from plants. Typical solvents used are hexane and petroleum ether.

Rose concrete is obtained through solvent extraction. Used in cosmetics and for obtaining absolute. Concretes are obtained through the use of an organic solvent mixed with plant material. The resulting material is a wax like mass used in cosmetics, but whose primary use is to obtain absolutes.
